Namaste! How else should I begin this post!

The greeting is the first thing that you learn about a place. It is the first thing that you get to hear in your flight, at the airport, in the taxi and of course at the travel destinations. Greeting from your homeland is also something you carry with you.

Namaste is the most commonly used greeting in India. Very often, when people realize you are an Indian, they fold hands and greet you with a Namaste.

However, when nothing in India is universal, how can our greetings be. Here is a list of some of the commonly used greetings across India.

Thanks to my Twitter and FB timeline for adding to this list. I knew most of them, but some of them like Dhaal Karu from Himachal was a revelation for me.

Researching for this post was absolute fun.

1. Namaste & its Variants

Namaste means ‘I bow to the divine in you’. Ask any Hippie and they would even say ‘The divine in me bows to the divine in you’.

The term has many variants – Namaskar, which is ideally used when you address more than one person.

In Kerala it becomes Namaskaram, in Karnataka it goes as Namaskara and in Andhra states Namaskaramu.

Nepal also uses the same term or Namaskar to greet.

They all mean the same – acknowledging the divine or good in you before any conversation or transaction begins.

2. Ram Ram & its variants

After the more popular Namaste greeting, Ram Ram and its various variants are used in most of the Hindi speaking belt to greet each other. In Awadh and Mithila you hear Sita Ram, Sita Ram. At areas of Bihar and Jharkhand, it becomes Jai Siya Ram. In Haryana, it is usually Ram Ram.

The idea behind this greeting to remember Sri Ram who is the 7th Avatar of Vishnu. Considered Maryada Purushottam, it is probably a way to remind each other and oneself to follow his conduct.

3. Jai Sri Krishna in Gujarat

If you have traveled in Gujarat, interacted with Gujarati families or even watched Gujarati content on TV, you know they all greet each other with ‘Jai Sri Krishna‘.

Krishna chose to make Dwarka his golden city, he ruled the world from here and continues to rule the hearts of the people of Gujarat.

In Dwarka, the greeting becomes more specific to – Jai Dwarkadhish.

4. Radhe Radhe in Braj Bhumi

In Braj, Radha rules. She is the queen and she is the Gopika. To reach Krishna too, you have to go through her. You don’t need to read or know anything about her. Just land anywhere in Braj and ‘Radhe Radhe‘ is not just a greeting but it means excuse me, leave my way, an exclamation and anything that does not need other words.

Jai Sri Radhe is a variant that you hear in temples of Braj sometimes.

5. Sat Sri Akaal in Punjab

A common greeting among Sikhs and Punjabis is Sat Sri Akaal. Sat means Truth, Sri is a respectful honorific and Akaal means timeless. So, you are essentially remembering the Timeless Truth or that Truth is Timeless and resides within all of us.

Sat Sri Akaal is a part of the clarion call given by Guru Gobind Singh – Jo Bole So Nihal, Sat Sri Akaal.

Another longer greeting is ‘Waheguru Ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji ki Fateh‘ – it is a reminder that all of us come from that one supreme being which is pure and at the end that is what remains.

6. Vanakkam – Tamil Nadu

Vanakkam is used by Tamil people living anywhere in the world. Essentially it means the same as Namaste. It is bowing down to or respecting the divine inside you. It comes from the root word – Vanagu meaning to bow down. Some literature mentions that Vanakkam specifically refers to the divine at the third eye located between your brows.

7. Khamma Ghani – Rajasthan

I first heard Khamma Ghani in some Hindi films based in Rajasthan. Next, I heard it during my visit to Udaipur. In my mind, it got associated with Rajasthan, but no one could explain what it meant. Now, I have two theories for this:

First is simple – Khamma comes from Sanskrit Kshama meaning forgiveness. Ghani means ‘a lot’. So, the greeting Khamma Ghani simply means – seeking forgiveness for any inadvertent hurt that may have been done or any lapses in hospitality.

The second source one is more historical – in 8th CE AD, 3 successive Mewari Kings, sharing the common name Khumaan, averted many attacks by Arabs. Due to this, the people in their kingdom lived happily for the next 1000 years or so. So, people started greeting each other ‘Khamma Ghani’ meaning ‘May we be blessed with many Khumaans’.

Take your pick for the meaning but when people say it with folded hands – it is a sweet greeting to exchange.

When used with elders Sa is added at the end – Khamma Ghani Sa.

8. Jule – Ladakh

When you travel through the Lahaul Spiti Valley in Himachal or do road trips in Ladakh, you are bound to be greeted with ‘Jule’, pronounced as Joo-Lay. It is a greeting mostly used by Buddhist dominated areas of the Himalayan valleys. It probably means ‘Respect’. I am not sure what it means and what is the root word. If you know, please share.

Just like Radhe Radhe, Jule too can mean thank you, please, excuse me or just Hello.

Tashi Delek is also used in some places.

9. Jai Jinendra – Jains across India

Jai Jinendra is used by all Jains to greet each other. We do not hear it very much as the Jains are a very small minority even within India and they usually use it among themselves only.

Jai Jinendra means victory to Jinendra or the Tirthankar, the souls who have won over their all their senses and have realized the ultimate knowledge.

This greeting directly bows downs to those who have real knowledge.

10. Swami Sharanam by followers of Ayyappa

Swami Sharanam or Swami Sharnam Ayyappa is actually a chant that is also used as a greeting by followers of Ayyappa when they meet each other. They start and end the conversation with this chant. Ayyappa followers are found in Kerala and all other south Indian states.

11. Aadab – Muslims primarily

Aadab is used to greet by followers of Islam and in places where Urdu is spoken. Could not find the meaning or intent of the word. If you know, please share.

12. Dhaal Karu in Himachal

This is another greeting from Himachal, though I will be honest, I am yet to hear it. However, my Himachali friends confirm this is used in Kullu Manali region of the state. The meaning is most probably similar to Namaste.

13. Narmade Har – On banks of Narmada

When you walk with the Narmada, the most common greeting you would hear is ‘Narmade Har’ – may the Narmada take away all your sorrows and sufferings.

Har Har Gange is also heard at places like Rishikesh, Prayagraj, and Varanasi, but not so consistently.

14. Jai Jai – Bikaner

During a trip to Bikaner, I heard the hotel greet us with ‘Jai Jai’. When I inquired, they said, this is how Bikaner greets people. I have not heard it outside the hotel, but it sounds very sweet, royal and full of Veer Rasa or emotion of bravery.

15. Pranam – for the elders

This is an India wide greeting used by the younger people to greet the elders. More often than not, it is complemented by touching the feet.

16. Region-based Greetings

Jai Bhole Nath – Varanasi. The city of Shiva has to have a greeting with his name

Jai Jagannath in Puri and around Odisha

17. Hello

Hello is not really an Indian greeting but probably the most used, especially on phone and in urban areas. Before writing this post I had no idea about the origins of the word ‘Hello’, although we used it so many times every day. Apparently, it is not a greeting per se but a way of drawing attention. Another contender for this is Ahoy.

18. Good Morning

Good Morning, Good Afternoon, Good Evening or Good Night is the neutral or should I say secular ways to greet anyone. I think I picked it up in school and continued using it till my corporate life. The Good Morning though got reduced to just Morning 🙂

19. Jai Jhulelal

Jai Jhulelal is used by the Sindhi community. Jhulelal is supposed to be the incarnation of Varun, the lord of the seas.

20. Jai Mata Di

It is used by the followers of the Devi or the divine feminine. Mata here refers to Jagadamba or the mother who is the creator, sustainer, and destroyer of everything that exists in this universe.

21. Ayubowan in Sri Lanka

Ayubowan in Sri Lanka comes from Sanskrit – Ayushman Bhava which means ‘May you have a long life’.

22. Sawasdee in Thailand

Sawasdee, the ubiquitous greeting of Thailand, also said with folded hands from Swasti which means wishing well.

All the greetings that have an origin in India or Sanskrit are said with folded hands formally, although informally sometimes you just say them.

Early Motherhood

I am back at the cafe, sipping my cold coffee and writing this note. Looking out of the window I see the traffic rushing past me. As I look closely at the vehicles, faces of people draw my attention. I try to study the faces, look for experiences behind the emotions. After all our emotions drive us, at least that’s what I think.

My mind is trying to sort what could be the next best post for the blog. Images from the early days of motherhood linger in my head. Those days have clearly had a huge impact on my Self.

After I turned 25, I fought what feels like a long battle with Endometriosis all the way till I became pregnant at 36. Endometriosis is a debilitating condition, in which the tissues on the uterus lining also exist outside the uterus. In my case it was on both the ovaries leading to massive tumors. I had major pelvic pain and severe mood swings. Despite the condition I lived a full life, a loving relationship with my partner/spouse, hanging out with friends, travelling, partying, working as a school counsellor, conducting lectures and life skills classes, managing a home, learning contemporary dance and yoga. However, the co-morbid condition of infertility preoccupied me. I was told early on in the diagnosis of endometriosis that the condition has no cure and leads to infertility (interestingly the traditional cure to endometriosis is pregnancy!). I found a wonderful gynaecologist to help me maintain my condition without too many surgeries (I have had two laparoscopies to remove endometriotic tumors). At 35 I finally decided to stop treatment and try the good old bang-bang way to get pregnant! IVF, IUI were other options given to me but Romit and I decided to wait it out. I took some pills to help me during the period of ovulation. On a trek to the village of Tosh in Himachal Pradesh, I felt easily tired, at the same time a sense of calm descended on me. I was hopeful yet willing to accept that I might not be able to ever conceive ‘naturally’. A week after the trek, a simple method of pee on the stick and a blood test confirmed I was pregnant!!

I didn’t talk to anyone about the pregnancy. I couldn’t believe it, and decided to not talk about it till after the first sonography (ultrasound). A week later at the sonography table under the eye of my doctor who seemed more excited than me, my pregnancy was confirmed. On the screen I could only see some black and white squiggles. My mind felt uneasy. Soon enough Romit was called in and the doctor said to him “So I see twins!”. TWINS!! Romit raised his palm up and said to the doc “Alrightttt! High Five!” I was lying there numb. No smile. No instant happiness. But intense fear. And a constant “WTF!!!! I wanted ONE!”(in my head, never aloud)

After intense mental stress due to endometriosis and the struggle with infertility, the reality of positive on the pregnancy test was pretty surreal. Also I was under the grip of hormonal changes that brought with it intense nausea, something that lasted throughout the pregnancy. Looking back at my pregnancy what I most remember is the constant nausea. I spent most of the following 36 weeks 4 days in bed lying around or sitting around in a big armchair that Romit especially picked up for the pregnancy. I barely remember smiling or felling wonderful. It was much later into the pregnancy that I realised I was severely depressed. This was the most bodily emotional I had ever felt, by which I mean that even though my mind was at ease, my body felt heavy and lethargic. Emotionally I felt low and cried easily. Before this pregnancy, anytime I felt like this I had the emotional courage to analyse my feelings and use body movement like dance or yoga to conquer depressive feelings. Not this time. This time it all felt unusual. I did not feel motivated to move or exercise.

On consulting my gynecologist, I shared my worries around the twin pregnancy, she simply encouraged me to ‘take it easy’ and ‘just chill’ and ‘this happens’ and ‘just start looking for nannies’. I did not feel heard or understood. Here I am not blaming the gynecologist for her lack of empathy, I do wish she was more understanding but I also know she did her best to be there for me. Soon enough I stopped talking about my feelings of depression and intense fatique. I did not look for nannies. I read books. Watched a lot of Netflix shows. Have you seen the show- Transparent?! I binge watched that one.

In essence, my emotions felt pretty out of control. My body felt alien.

My social life came crashing down. I could not party anymore because partying means getting high, that was out of question. The constant hanging out at our home ended abruptly too.

I thought I was ready for motherhood, but the start of the process was so life altering that I felt out of control. Whenever I feel out of control I look within. I self-reflect. I spent time in silence (Apart from binge TV watching). I did a whole lot of that. And by the second trimester felt a little bit like myself. Such phases of depersonalisation, was what I was often consumed by all through the pregnancy. Then came the third trimester, the time of added worries about ‘something going wrong’ and ‘I hope I can carry them all the way’ and ‘do I really need a nanny?’

As I write I feel words have limited impact. How does one express the intensity of feelings with mere words?

Five days after completing 36 weeks of pregnancy, I was admitted for a planned delivery to one of the best hospitals (or so they say) of Bombay. It has not been easy for me to talk about my thoughts and feelings about my experience of motherhood with the fear of being judged. Whenever I did express my fears, concerns, or confusions I was told by most people something to the effect of ‘but that is how it is...just chill’ or ‘why don’t you just take it easy’ or ‘you need to enjoy this time’ or ‘you think a lot...go eat something you feel like’. Phew!! I still didn’t feel brave or chilled out or hungry. It seems now that I was constantly feeling not heard and understood. Why should that even be important to me at this stage in life which I couldn’t wait for to experience? I hope to find an answer through this task of self-reflection. But for now maybe it suffices to say I have this desire to be understood inspite of a not so perfect pregnancy, to be heard even though I possibly brought upon myself ‘negative’ thoughts, to share my unusual experiences mostly because I am not afraid of unusual, to question the media popular images of glowing expectant mothers smiling with joy or ordering their husbands to get them a mid night snack. The preconceived notions and images of pregnancies led to certain expectations that I could not live upto.

I spent most of my husband-time holding his hand and asking him to fix the million pillows I slept with. And telling him all about the stressors of the pregnancy. And binge-TV watching.

It's that time of year again when it's time to go back and watch the TV series "Hostages" starring Michael Douglas, John Rambo and Ben Kingsley. Hostage situation is still prevalent today and you can find many terrorist and hostage situations all over the world. Many people are caught in the middle and in an effort to find out who has taken them captive and why they are in their custody, the CIA sends in a group of specialists called "Hostage Rescue Team".

The team consists of some very experienced and highly trained members. Their job is to get the hostages out of the area, while keeping an eye on the hostage taker. In the first episode we see one member (played by Richard Dean Anderson) running into a building and a huge explosion just happens right behind him and the person he was protecting gets shot in the leg.

The hostage rescue team quickly realizes that there are two men that have been killed - one by a shotgun blast from the hostage taker and the other who is killed by the fire from a machine gun of the hostage rescue team. But one member has also been killed during the firefight. In this episode the series portrays how important it is to use every tool at the disposal of the team. While the team is dealing with multiple suspects, one suspect in particular has to be dealt with quickly.

Throughout the series, the hostages that the hostage rescue team is dealing with change as the series goes along. While the first episode involves only a small group of hostages, the second episode shows the hostages being taken to Iran and eventually to Iraq. The team has to take care of the hostages, while protecting the American hostages from terrorists. As the episodes progress, we learn more about the members of the team, as well as the various missions they are asked to complete throughout the series.

The "Hostages" team was created by writer/directors Steven Soderbergh and Michael Cuesta. The team that they have assembled and have worked with since the first season is composed of more than a dozen different members from across the globe, including people who have worked on movies such as "A Few Good Men", "Ocean's Eleven", "The Perfect Storm"Varsity Blues".

The "Hostages" series has been a major hit for both the film industry and television industry and has made the team a household name. The fans of the show are extremely loyal and will watch each episode over again, as the show continues to provide them with more twists and turns in the plot line.

The third episode of the new "Hostages" TV series, airing on SyFy is a very good one. It follows on the heels of the premiere, which had been rather confusing for many viewers. The second season, on the other hand, was a lot more exciting and suspenseful, which makes it even more of a must-see. "Hostages" continue that high level of suspense and mystery in the show.

The first few minutes were extremely suspenseful as a large group of people who didn't know each other were being stalked by a group of criminals who didn't seem to care who they killed or how. The crime scene was set in an upscale hotel where a lot of people who had attended the same party were supposed to be staying. The hotel manager was killed in front of his office, but he doesn't know until he has to tell all of his staff members. The other guests and workers also have to come up with a plan to save everyone who was left behind.

This is a story about a mysterious stranger who stalks people and kills them. The stranger has to be stopped before he can start another killing spree and cause as much mayhem as he did the last time he went on a killing spree. The series revolves around the various personalities of the suspects, as well as the team of people who have to take down this dangerous person.

Most of the episodes have been extremely entertaining and offer a lot of tension, which is very evident in the new season of "Hostages". Some of the main characters who were introduced in the show are the hotel manager, an FBI agent who is part of a top-secret team trying to catch this suspect, and a young man who happens to be a part of the team as well. The new episodes will delve a little deeper into their history and who exactly they all are. The series promises to be even more thrilling, as the show continues to grow in popularity every day.

The best part of the show is the fact that it focuses on the fact that there are a number of people out there who may be criminals who have been victims of similar crimes before. Because of this, a new group of people is trying to prevent these same people from doing things to innocent people again. This new group of people includes the FBI agent, who is determined to catch a serial killer who killed many people in his previous crime spree, as well as his team of other members who work together to stop another killer who is also working as a hitman.

The second season of "Hostages" is the perfect way to end the series after one of its most exciting seasons so far. The show promises to continue to give viewers a lot of entertainment for a long time to come. If you haven't already seen the first season, I highly suggest that you check it out and give it a shot. You won't be disappointed!

A new Hindi web series, Aaradhyaan, is about a hostage who is taken to a remote village in India's northern state of Himachal Pradesh. The village has been threatened by terrorists who are holding hostages and killing the innocent civilians. Aaradhyaan is directed by Bipin Panikkar, an award-winning director who has worked on some of the most popular Hindi TV shows like Ashokan Fareed, Kuch Hota and Sholay to name a few.

Aaradhyaan is a unique web series, not unlike The Day After Tomorrow. It is directed by an American but was shot in India. It centers around a hostage in a rural village who gets kidnapped and taken to a very remote location where he is forced to make a choice between his life and the lives of his captors. It is an interesting tale with a few twists.

Aaradhyaan is very much different from other Indian film, since it has a very unique plot that doesn't follow the traditional story line that we have come to know. It uses a very different way of telling the story and this is one of the reasons why people are now trying to find a copy of the web series.

Aaron, the protagonist of the web series, is a British national who was serving as a security guard in India when terrorists attacked. Aaron had to work for the terrorists for a short period of time before they were killed. He later returned home only to be placed under arrest and accused of spying. Due to his good record and his expertise in counter-terrorism, he has become a prime suspect of being a spy and therefore has been taken hostage.

Aaron must learn to survive his imprisonment, while fighting off other terrorists as well as the people of his village who are also involved in his kidnapping. He is also required to fight his way through the maze of the wilderness and face several other obstacles along the way. His ultimate goal is to free himself and return to normal life. In order to achieve this goal, he is forced to think and act quickly, which in turn creates an atmosphere of suspense.

Aaradhyaan is a very intriguing web series, and the storyline and acting of the lead character Aaron are very well done. It is entertaining, suspenseful and is full of adventure and excitement. The story and visuals are top notch. This makes it an ideal Hindi movie for viewing online.

Cabin crew members of Indian airlines will have personal protective equipment (PPE) like face shields, gowns and masks as part of their attire on commercial passenger flights when they resume operations, industry sources said.

Airlines such as IndiGo, Air India, Vistara and AirAsia India have decided to go with the new attire in order to ensure safety of cabin crew members as they are in close proximity to passengers during flights, the sources said.

India reports second-highest spike in COVID-19 cases with total inching towards 80,000

In the biggest surge in COVID-19 infections in Delhi, 472 people tested positive for the novel coronavirus on Thursday, as India's total neared 80,000 with 3,995 fresh cases reported, the second-highest rise in a day.

While this was the fifth consecutive day of over 3,500 cases being added to the country's overall count, the growth rate of the infection has gradually decreased during this period.

Centre to provide free food grain to migrants, concessional credit to farmers

The government on Thursday announced a Rs 3.16 lakh crore package of free foodgrains for migrant workers, concessional credit to farmers and working capital loan for street vendors as part of the second tranche of fiscal stimulus to heal an economy hit hard by coronavirus lockdown.

At a news conference, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said 8 crore migrant workers will get 5 kgs of grains and 1 kg of pulses free for two months, while 50 lakh street vendors rendered jobless by the lockdown would be given a working capital loan of Rs 10,000 each.

The second tranche, announced on Thursday, focussed on migrant workers, street vendors, small traders, the self-employed and small farmers.

Hindustan Times quoted Junaid Ahmad, country director, World Bank, as saying, "The project will be crucial to rebalance social security towards urban poor, as much as rural."

Of the total 81,970, there are 51,401 active cases, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

At least two migrant workers were killed, 14 seriously injured in a road accident in Jalaun, Uttar Pradesh on Thursday night, according to media reports. The incident took place when a DCM carrying migrant labourers was hit by a vehicle in Girthan village located in NH-27 of Etah police station area, TV9 reported.

The report also mentioned, that a woman was among the two killed of the total 46 migrant workers in the DCM vehicle. All the injured have been admitted to the Government Medical College Orai.

The Maharashtra government has called for an extension of lockdown in the State till 31 May, and is likely to send a report to this effect to the Centre by Friday.

Maharashtra on Thursday reported 1,602 fresh COVID-19 cases, the highest single-day spike so far, taking the state’s overall count to 27,524, according to state health department data.

With 44 deaths registered today, the death toll in Maharashtra due to the contagious coronavirus disease has now breached the 1000-mark and stands at 1019.

The number of deaths from COVID-19 disease rose to 2,549 and the number of cases climbed to 78,003 on Thursday, registering an increase of 134 fatalities and 3,722 infections in the last 24 hours since Wednesday 8 am, according to the Union Health Ministry.

The number of active COVID-19 cases stood at 49,219 while 26,234 people have recovered and one patient has migrated, it said.

Meanwhile, Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman addressed the media for the second day in a row, and spelt out more details of the Centre's Rs 20-lakh-crore special economic package. She said the second tranche of economic stimulus package will be for the benefit of migrant workers, street vendors and small farmers.

FM announces concessional credit for farmers, free food grains for migrants

Sitharaman on Thursday announced a Rs 3.16 lakh crore package comprising free food grains for migrant workers, Rs 2 lakh crore concessional credit to small farmers and working capital loan for street vendors in a bid to help those hit hard by the nationwide lockdown.

Together with the Wednesday's Rs 5.94 lakh crore package that mostly comprised off-budget credit line and support to small businesses, shadow banks and electricity distribution companies, the government has unveiled over Rs 9 lakh crore plans out of the Rs 20 lakh crore package announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to heal Asia's third-largest economy that was seen hurtling towards its first full-year contraction in four decades.

Sitharaman said each of the eight crore migrant workers, who had to leave their workplaces after imposition of the lockdown on 25 March, will get 5 kg grains and 1 kg pulses free for two months.

Also, 50 lakh street vendors who were rendered jobless as the government ordered stay-at-home would be given a working capital loan of Rs 10,000 each to restart their businesses.

For farmers, the finance minister announced a Rs 2 lakh crore concessional credit through Kisan Credits Cards, benefiting as many as 2.5 crore farmers.

However, the Congress criticised the economic package as a "jumla" saying it has so far been way short of what Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised and the entire press conference of the finance minister was classic display of "arrogance, ignorance and insensitivity".

Senior spokesperson of the party Anand Sharma said the country believed that Modi was serious when he made the "dramatic" announcement of giving 10 percent of the GDP as a package to revive the economy and support workers and migrant labourers and that expectations had soared.

"The finance minister's announcement dashed all hopes," he said.

State-wise deaths and cases

India has reported a total 134 deaths deaths since Wednesday morning, of which 54 were in Maharashtra, 29 in Gujarat, 20 in Delhi, 9 in West Bengal, seven in Madhya Pradesh, four in Rajasthan, three in Tamil Nadu, two each in Telangana and Karnataka and one each in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh.

Of the 2,549 fatalities, Maharashtra tops the tally with 975 fatalities, Gujarat comes second with 566 deaths, followed by Madhya Pradesh at 232, West Bengal at 207, Rajasthan at 121, Delhi at 106, Uttar Pradesh at 83, Tamil Nadu at 64 and Andhra Pradesh at 47.

The toll reached 34 in Telangana, 33 in Karnataka and 32 in Punjab on Thursday. Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir have reported 11 fatalities each due to the respiratory disease while Bihar has registered seven and Kerala has reported four deaths.

Jharkhand, Chandigarh and Odisha have recorded three COVID-19 fatalities each while Himachal Pradesh and Assam have reported two deaths each. Meghalaya, Uttarakhand and Puducherry have reported one fatality each, according to the ministry data.

According to the ministry's website, more than 70 percent of the deaths are due to comorbidities.

According to the health ministry data updated in the morning, the highest number of confirmed cases in the country is from Maharashtra at 25,922, followed by Gujarat at 9,267, Tamil Nadu at 9,227, Delhi at 7,998, Rajasthan at 4,328, Madhya Pradesh at 4,173 and Uttar Pradesh at 3,729.

The number of COVID-19 cases has gone up to 2,290 in West Bengal, 2,137 in Andhra Pradesh and 1,924 in Punjab. It has risen to 1,367 in Telangana, 971 in Jammu and Kashmir, 959 in Karnataka, 940 in Bihar and 793 in Haryana.

Kerala has reported 534 coronavirus cases so far, while Odisha has 538 cases. A total of 187 people have been infected with the virus in Chandigarh and 173 in Jharkhand.

Tripura has reported 155 cases, Assam has 80 cases, Uttarakhand has 72, Himachal Pradesh has 66 cases, Chhattisgarh has 59 and Ladakh has registered 43 cases so far.

Thirty-three COVID-19 cases have been reported from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Meghalaya and Puducherry have registered 13 cases each while Goa has seven COVID-19 cases.

Manipur has two cases. Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Dadra and Nagar Haveli have reported a case each till now.

Doubling time has slowed to 13.9 days, says health minister

The doubling time of novel coronavirus cases has slowed to 13.9 days in the last three days and India now has a capacity of 1,00,000 COVID-19 tests per day with nearly 20 lakh carried out till now, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said.

Vardhan, who visited the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in Delhi and dedicated a COBAS 6800 testing machine to the nation, said 14 states and Union territories have not reported any case of the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

These states and UTs are Gujarat, Telangana, Jharkhand, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Goa, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Puducherry.

Also, Daman and Diu, Sikkim, Nagaland and Lakshadweep have not reported any cases so far.

Meanwhile, the government has decided to use one time RT-PCR based pooled sampling for COVID-19 screening of migrant workers and returnees from abroad kept in quarantine facilities.

The same testing technique would also be used for monitoring in green zone districts which have reported no cases till now or in the last 21 days, the health ministry said while issuing "Guidelines for RT-PCR based pooled sampling for migrants/returnees from abroad/green zones".

806 shramik special trains brought into operation till now, says Railways

The Railways has operated 806 shramik special trains since 1 May, ferrying home 10 lakh migrant workers who were stranded in various parts of the country due to the coronavirus-triggered lockdown, officials said on Thursday. Of these, Uttar Pradesh received the maximum number of trains followed by Bihar, they said.

"As on 14 May, 2020, a total of 806 'shramik special' trains have been operationalised from various states across the country. More than 10 lakh passengers have reached their home state.

"Trains are being run by the Railways only after concurrence is given both by the state which is sending the passengers and the state which is receiving them," the railways said.

Out of the 806 trains which have been operated so far, 166 are in transit while 640 have terminated at various stations. Sixty-three more are in the pipeline, an official said.

These 806 trains were terminated in various states like Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Mizoram, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.
